Qualification 1:


ESOL Skills for Life (Entry 1 – Level 2)


RSG offers ESOL Skills for life qualification which is designed to help students to improve their basic English language skills. These skills include English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The course will give many benefits to the student and successful completion would mean that the student will be able to effectively communicate in English and improve reading and writing skills and also gain a formal recognition for their English Skills.

Study Mode: Full time/Part time

Entry Requirements: The ESOL skills for Life qualifications are open to everyone, irrespective of qualifications, although following criteria to be met in order to secure admission at RSG.

There will be an initial diagnostic test to identify the right competency level of candidate. A reference from an educational institution or employer last attended by the applicant would be helpful.

Course Contents/Description:

The ESOL course at our college is divided into four components:

Component 1: Reading, Component 2: Writing, Component 3: Speaking, Component 4: Listening

Functional Skills

Functional Skills Qualification in English at Entry Levels 1 – Level 2

Functional Skills English qualifications are designed to give learners the skills to operate confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life. They have been created in response to employers’ perceptions that many learners are not achieving a sufficiently firm grounding in the basics.

Study Mode: Full time/Part time

 

Entry Requirements:

Students on the programme will be at least 18 years of age.

There are no formal requirements entry requirements however, you will be assessed to ensure this course is suited to your needs.


What will you learn?

The aims of these qualifications are to develop learner understanding and skills in:


Entry 1

Speaking, Listening and Communication – participate in and understand the main points of simple discussions/exchanges about familiar topics with another person in a familiar situation.

Reading – Read and understand short, simple texts that explain or recount information.

Writing – Write short, simple sentences.

Spelling Tests – Multiple choice test.


Entry 2

Speaking, Listening and Communication – participate in discussions/exchanges about familiar topics making active contributions, with one or more people in familiar situations.

Reading – Read and understand short, simple texts that explain or recount information.

Writing – Write short texts with some awareness of the intended audience.


Spelling Tests – Multiple choice test.


Entry 3

Speaking, Listening and Communication – respond appropriately to others and make some extended contributions in familiar formal and informal discussions and exchanges.

Reading – Read and understand the purpose and content of straightforward texts that explain, inform and recount information.

Writing – Write texts with some adaptation to the intended audience.

Spelling Tests – Multiple choice test.

Representing – selecting the mathematics and information to model a situation.

Analysing – processing and using mathematics.

Essential Digital Skills Entry Level 3 and Level 1

Essential Digital Skills are more important than ever. Since 2020, face-to-face communication has become more difficult, so understanding digital technology and communication is vital to stay connected in work and life.


These qualifications are designed to meet digital knowledge gaps and provide vital skills, such as:

Course Content

NVQ level 2


This level will suit you if you are working in rail engineering and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.


There are eight options available at Level 2:

  • NVQ Award in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance
  • NVQ Certificate in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance
  • NVQ Certificate in Rail Engineering Protection Master
  • NVQ Certificate in Non-Destructive Rail Testing
  • NVQ Certificate in Track Patrolling
  • NVQ Diploma in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance
  • NVQ Certificate in Rail Engineering Traction and Rolling Stock
  • NVQ Certificate in Rail Engineering Signalling Installer.


Level 2 options comprise mandatory and optional units.



Level 3 is ideal if you are working in rail engineering and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring that work meets the required standard.


There are eight qualifications available at Level 3:

  • NVQ Certificate in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance
  • NVQ Diploma in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance
